Acrylic on Canvas w/Texture

In Norse mythology Mirkwood (Myrkviðr) was a legendary forest whose crossing symbolized the penetrating barriers between one world and another, especially the world of gods and the world of fire. In modern times, J.R.R. Tolkien appropriated the Old Norse myth, naming one of his most unknowable (and perilous) forests, “Mirkwood,” which served to provide mysterious transitions for the various heroic quests of the main characters. In this painting I see the viewer entering Mirkwood, in spite of awaiting peril, and there finding perhaps transcendental enchantment and sustaining beauty (48" x 60").
